A new realistic many-body approach for the description of high-energy scattering processes off complex nuclei

A linked cluster expansion for the calculation of ground state observables of nuclei with realistic interactions has been developed. Using the V8' potential the ground state energy, density and momentum distribution of complex nuclei have been calculated and found to be in good agreement with the results obtained within the Fermi Hyper Netted Chain, and Variational Monte Carlo approaches. Using the same cluster expansion, with wave function and correlations parameters fixed from the calculation of the ground-state observables, various high energy scattering processes off complex nuclei have been calculated taking final state interaction effects into account by means of the Glauber multiple scattering series.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, presented by M. Testing the Gaussian Approximation to the JIMWLK Equation

In processes involving small-x partons, like in deep inelastic scattering and in hadronic collisions at high energy, the final state can be expressed in terms of correlators of Wilson lines. We study such high-point correlators evolving according to the JIMWLK equation and we confirm the results of previous numerical and analytic work, by using an independent method, that the solution to the JIMWLK equation can be very well approximated by an appropriate Gaussian wavefunction. We explore both fixed and running coupling evolution, where in the latter the scale is set according to various prescriptions. As a byproduct, we also numerically confirm to high accuracy the validity of the law governing the behavior of the S-matrix close to the unitarity limit, the Levin-Tuchin formula. We furthermore outline how to calculate correlators with open color indices.Comment: 25 pages, 11 figures. v2: minor corrections, one equation added, updated to match published versio

Realistic calculations of correlations and final state interaction effects in the A(e,e'p)X process off complex nuclei

A linked cluster expansion for the calculation of ground state observables of complex nuclei with realistic interactions has been used to calculate the ground state energy, density and momentum distribution of 16O and 40Ca. Using the same cluster expansion and the wave function and correlation parameters obtained from the energy calculation, we have evaluated the semi inclusive reaction A(e,e'p)X taking final state interaction (FSI) into account by a Glauber type approach; the comparison between the distorted and undistorted momentum distributions provides an estimate of the transparency of the nuclear medium to the propagation of the hit proton. The effect of color transparency is also included by considering the Finite Formation Time (FFT) that the hit hadron needs to reach its asymptotic physical state.Comment: 8 pages, Latex, 8 figures, presented at the "2nd International Conference on Nuclear and Particle Physics with CEBAF at JLab

A Monte Carlo generator of nucleon configurations in complex nuclei including Nucleon-Nucleon correlations

We developed a Monte Carlo event generator for production of nucleon configurations in complex nuclei consistently including effects of Nucleon-Nucleon (NN) correlations. Our approach is based on the Metropolis search for configurations satisfying essential constraints imposed by short- and long-range NN correlations, guided by the findings of realistic calculations of one- and two-body densities for medium-heavy nuclei. The produced event generator can be used for Monte Carlo (MC) studies of pA and AA collisions. We perform several tests of consistency of the code and comparison with previous models, in the case of high energy proton-nucleus scattering on an event-by-event basis, using nucleus configurations produced by our code and Glauber multiple scattering theory both for the uncorrelated and the correlated configurations; fluctuations of the average number of collisions are shown to be affected considerably by the introduction of NN correlations in the target nucleus. We also use the generator to estimate maximal possible gluon nuclear shadowing in a simple geometric model.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures; removed one figure, reduced length; to be published in Phys. Proton Decay: Improving the sensitivity through nuclear dynamics?

The kinematics of the decay of a bound proton is governed by the proton spectral function. We evaluate this quantity in 16O using the information from nuclear physics experiments. It also includes a correlated part. The reliability of this evaluation is sufficient to open the possibility of correlated cuts in the missing mass and momentum variables in order to identify the decay events from the bound protons with a possible increase of the signal to noise ratio.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures.
